JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER SAILFISH

Spring–Summer 2008

Striving for Excellence. . .and Having Fun!!!

Program Structure

Jewish Community Center Aquatics is a full service program that begins with learn-to-swim lessons and advances to the competitive swim team. The Sailfish range from novice swimmers through nationally ranked swimmers and progresses all the way to a master swim program for adults.  The Sailfish swim team belongs to and is sanctioned by USA Swimming. Each participant in the program is evaluated and placed in the appropriate group that best suits his or her well being. Sound technique and proper fundamentals are stressed at all levels with each level being a natural transition to the next level.  Small group strength and core training is also available for the Sailfish swim team members.

At each level of the Sailfish program, swimmers are instructed to strive for excellence. Excellence in this sense represents the achievement of that level at which you know that you have done your utmost to become the best you can be. This philosophy is consistent throughout the program, and every Sailfish, novice to master swimmer is encouraged to do his or her best.

*          We are one of the top USA Swimming Teams in Western Pennsylvania.

*          We have developed numerous outstanding Age Group, Middle & High School, Junior &  Senior    National, International, Maccabi and Olympic swimmers.

SAILFISH SWIMMING

The following information is meant to be a helpful reference to USA Swimming with the Sailfish and to provide a better understanding of the Sailfish program, team fees, practice schedules, USA Swim meet schedules and other helpful information.  As with membership to any organization, certain procedures and fundraising/volunteer obligations must be met for enrollment into the Sailfish.  A two-week try-out period is offered before you must enroll into the program.  The procedures for enrollment and fundraising/volunteer obligations are listed below.

1.         JCC Membership

2.         USA/Sailfish Swimming Registration

3.         Sailfish Group Fee

4.         Escrow account for swim meet entries

5.         Fund raising/volunteer obligations

6.         Parents Association

JCC Membership – All swimmers must be a member of the Jewish Community Center.  The JCC  Membership is a separate fee from the USA Swimming/Sailfish registration and the Sailfish group fees.  All swimmers must complete a JCC membership form and return it with your first payment to the  membership office. College summer swimmers see Al Rose, Head Coach.  The Jewish  Community Center provides two membership payment options; payment in full or the center Cheque Plan.  Call Membership at (412) 521-8010 if you have any questions.  The JCC  membership fees are shown below; these costs reflect a one year membership.

Individual membership - $675 or $59 a month.  New members pay a one time joining fee of $50.

Family membership - $999 or $86 a month.  New members pay a one time joining fee of $50.

ALL SWIMMERS MUST SHOW MEMBERSHIP CARD UPON ENTRANCE INTO THE BUILDING

USA/Sailfish Swimming Registration – USA Swimming and the Sailfish Swim Team have annual  registration fees.  This fee covers the USA Swimming membership and team expenses.  USA Swimming Registration is mandatory to participate in swim meets.  The registration fees for Squirrel Hill,  Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania (PA) and US Group are as follows;

 1st Swimmer - $130.00 Subsequent swimmers - $80.00                        Athlete Transfer - $5.00

Sailfish Group Fee – There are five practice groups in the Sailfish program:  the Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania (PA) and US Group.  The fee is based on your practice group.  This fee covers both the “short course” season (September – March) and the “long course” season (April – August).  However, if you are joining the Sailfish mid-season, the fee for the “long course” summer 2008 season is as follows:

12 & under swimmers - $250.00.  You need to have a JCC membership and complete the USA/Sailfish

Registration to participate in the summer Sailfish program.

13 & up swimmers - $325.00. You need to have a JCC membership and complete the USA/Sailfish

Registration to participate in the summer Sailfish program.

College summer swimmers - see Al Rose

New group fees for the 2008/2009 season will be announced in September.

Escrow account for swim meet entries - Upon entering a USA Swimming meet, each individual event and relay will cost a fee set up by the hosting club.  Usually, individual events cost $3.25 and relays $5.00 to $10.00.  There must be a $50 minimum balance kept in your escrow account at all times.  It is the responsibility of the parents to maintain sufficient funds in their escrow account so that their swimmers may be entered in swim meets.  The Escrow Treasurer maintains records and will notify the parents when their balance falls below the $50 minimum requirement.

Fund raising/volunteer obligations – The JCCS has two fundraising and one volunteer event each year.  These events help fund various areas of the Sailfish program such as; club, coaches and officials memberships to USA and AMS Swimming, coaches educational fees, training equipment for swimmers, coaching fees for meet attendance, banquet and parties, team trips and coaches expenses to state, regional and national meets so they can attend with our swimmers. Successful fundraising is vital for the continued success of the Sailfish.

 A.     Swim-A-Thon – The Swim-A-Thon is held every November.  It consists of swimmers obtaining pledges for each lap they swim (maximum 200 laps) or a flat donation.  The Swim-A-Thon benefits the JCC Myron Markel College Scholarship Fund and the Sailfish Swim Team. Every family is expected to participate or make a $50 donation.

 B.  Ads for “The Classic” Summer Swim Meet Program - Every year, the Sailfish parents sell       ad space in the meet program. This is another important element in the annual fundraising. All families are encouraged to purchase or solicit ads. Consider asking the restaurants, physicians, and small businesses that you frequent to contribute to the Sailfish swim club ad campaign. It  is great visibility! Of course, families can buy space to wish their swimmers “good luck,” as  well. We also encourage families to sponsor your child’s favorite race, and we will print their name in the program, too.   Prices will be set the first week in April; see Rachel Furman for  more details.

C.     The JCCS Classic Swim Meet – May 16th -18th, 2008 - Each year we host a swim meet at the Henry Kaufmann Family Recreation Park in Monroeville.  We raise most of our working capital from this meet.    It is expected that all Sailfish families work two complete sessions of our swim meet and make food donations for concessions, whether their child swims or not.  Your willingness to volunteer is crucial in making our meet a success financially and also the "super" meet of the summer.

Parents’ Association – The Sailfish has a very active Parents Association which provides you with the opportunity f

or "parent involvement" into the Sailfish Program.  BE PRO-ACTIVE.  Two to Three meetings throughout each season will be

held for parents.  These meetings are  run by Coach Rose and are held for your benefit so that you may be advised of all swim

information, upcoming events, team trips, banquet news, financial reports and a host of other information. PLEASE plan to attend

these meetings so that you know exactly what is going on with the Sailfish program. The Sailfish program cannot be effective unless

we have strong parent involvement and support.

Small Group Strength and Core Training

The Personal Training Center at the JCC offers special rates for the swim team members.  The program for each group will be approved by Head Coach, Al Rose and swimmers will be directed by a Certified Trainer.  Group fees need to be purchased 10 passes at a time.

  • Groups of 4 to 5 swimmers:                  $10.00 per hour each
  • Groups of 3 swimmers:                         $12.00 per hour each
  • Groups of 2 swimmers:                         $15.00 per hour each
  • Individual                                              $25.00 per hour

Swimmers are grouped by age:  11 & 12 or 13 and older.  Groups need to train 2 days per week and each group of 2 to 5 swimmers must stay together for training.

JCC Trainer -   Matt Proskin has a BS in movement science with a specialization in exercise science.  He is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Plyometric Instructor, ACE Certified Personal Trainer, and strength and conditioning coach for the University of Pittsburgh.  He can be reached by calling  412-521-8011 ext 231.

Swim Meet Entries - The JCC Sailfish participate in USA Swimming sanctioned meets. Each swimmer/parent is         responsible for entering swim meets and choosing their events.  The coach will have the final say  in what events will be swum. The Sailfish swim meet   schedule is posted on the JCC Sailfish web site (www.jccsailfish.org).  A meet entry due date is shown on the schedule for each swim meet.  Please make sure you check the due dates as it is required that all entries be in by that date. To enter a meet from the Sailfish swim meet schedule, click on the meet you are interested in entering.  The “structure” page from the meet invitation will appear.  The structure page will show you what events they are offering, the event numbers (you’ll need these for entering the meet), what day/session they will be swum and the qualifying times if there are any, not all  meets have qualifying times.  Once you choose your events, go back to the swim meet schedule page and click on the “Entry Form” link at the top of the page.  Fill out the form with the required information and click on the submit button at the bottom of the page.  You will receive an email confirmation that your entry was received (this may take a few    days).  There is a power point presentation of “how the entry page works” on our web site.   You can access this from the Sailfish meet schedule page.  The Allegheny Mountain  Swimming (AMS), our Local Swimming Committee, lists the entire USA swim meet schedule on their web site (www.amswim.org). They have the complete meet invitation for the swim meets on the Sailfish schedule.  The meet invitation lists other pertinent information about  the meet, such as all the rules, directions, etc.  You may only enter the meets that are on the Sailfish meet schedule.

AT THE MEET - ALWAYS check in with your coaches before your event to let them know you are swimming.  After your race, be sure to go to your coaches so that they may analyze your race.  DO NOT LEAVE A MEET before checking with coaches to find out if you are in a relay.  If a relay is scratched because you left, you will be charged for the scratched relay.  Come prepared to SWIM(Team Caps are required if swimmer uses a cap.)  Be sure to bring extra caps, towels, swim suits and a warm-up.  Often times you may want to bring a blanket as the team sits together in a certain area on the floor of a gym or cafeteria.  Food is usually available for a minimal cost but, if you wish, you may bring your own cooler.

Heat sheets are sold at the door so that you may re-check which events you are in and where you are seeded.  There is a fee for the heat sheet.

SAILFISH COMMUNICATION- Communication is the key to any successful program.  All JCC swimmers and parents welcome the opportunity to be helpful to anyone with a question.  Our Coaching Staff is available (during appropriate times) to answer your questions.  Please check the website frequently (www.jccsailfish.org) for all information regarding upcoming meets, practice schedule changes or additions, parent association meeting dates, etcMake sure you register your email address where you would like to receive sailfish information with the web master at jccs@jccsailfish.org.  We will keep you updated via email with all pertinent information.  If you have any questions you can e-mail Al Rose at:  jccs@jccsailfish.org.  or call him at 412-906-2583.
